Great Britain played like they had something to prove
Team Great Britain defeated Austria 5-1 in the last game of the European Championship for both teams. The game looked decided after the 5th inning where Great Britain gained 4 runs, but Austria carried on and was able to get 1 run in the top of the 7th inning.

After narrowly missing out on a spot in the World Tournament Great Britain had something to prove today. The match developed in Great Britain favor after 1 run gain in the 3rd innings. Austria seemed determined to keep going and was carried by their pitcher Martina Lackner.
All the main action happened in the 5th inning where Great Britain was able to gain 4 runs. Austria´s defence struggled as fielders let the ball pass them allowing Great Britain to gain bases and eventually runs. With loaded bases Great Britain was able to hit the ball way out into right field and 2 runs were scored.
Austria seemed to give up after the 5th inning and found it hard to bounce back. But a redeeming final run in the 7th inning gave us the final score of 5-1.
Post-Game Comments
Hayley Scott (head coach of Team Great Britain): That was the best we´ve played at this tournament so far. We were hitting well and the Russians made some nice defensive plays. They are a good team but I think that home run deflated them. They didn´t push us much at bat, though. They only had that one inning where they got some offence. We are our biggest opponent, though. We´re not concerned about who we play next.
Marcel Kratochwil (head Coach of Team Austria) There is always something we can work on, we had nothing to lose there. We already achieved our goal which was even better than the first goal we set so we were happy about that. We played well in the game, just gave up in the 5th innings after 4 runs, but we still fought until the end for the game, we scored in the last innings. The spirit of the team is still there and we played well on the tournament, it was the best tournament I ever had with this team. If we work two more years on that and we go to the next Championship I hope we will be better than this and we will stay in the top 6 level.
