Netherlands crushes Spain in their tournament opener

Just four innings were enough for the current cup holders to end the game against Spain. A massive output in the bottom of the first inning, where the Dutch scored eight runs, paved the way for an easy 10-0 victory. In the second inning, Karin Tuk hit hit the first home run of the championship.

The Dutch opened the scoreline in the bottom of the first inning with a triple into left field by Chantal Versluis, who got home herself just a while later with a second run. Saskia Kosterink added one more as she pulled Vonk back home and an RBI double by Dinette Oosting made it 5-0. Natalie Gosewehr’s three-base hit meant two more RBIs, on which there followed second long hit by Chantal Versluis and another run after a mistake in center field.

The Spanish team couldn’t reply, so Karin Tuk took the initiative and hit the first home run of the tournament in the bottom of the second and got home safely together with Virginie Anneveld. As there were no more runs in the third and fourth innings by either side, the Dutch managed to hold on for a mercy-rule win. They also got great pitiching from Dagmar Bloeming and Rebecca Soumeru.

Post-Game Comments:

Craig Montvidas (head coach of Team Netherlands): "You never know how the game’s gonna go. I think Spain was really aggressive and what maybe hurt them in the beginning were illegal pitches by their pitcher. They made one or two errors as well and our team is strong when our opponent makes errors. We take advantage of them. We’re lucky to end it early, but I certainly didn’t expect that. We take it one step at a time."

Elisa Aguilar (head coach of Spain): "The most important effect on this game was to make ourselves feel good. We didn’t start really well, but we played better in the later innings and that was important. We hope to get through this group from second place, so we have to just keep on going now."
