Italy mercies Great Britain in 5 innings
A nice game was played between two teams looking for a spot in the semifinals, Italy and Great Britain. It looked like the batters didn’t play their best games as both teams kept clean sheet for first three innings. In bottom of fourth, the Italians found a way of hitting British pitchers Kori and Keeli Waughs and scored seven times to win by the mercy rule.

Both teams struggled on offense from the beginning and the spectators saw just a few decent hits, mainly thanks to good pitching from both sides, but Team Italy broke the deadlock in bottom of fourth with seven runs. Giuilia Longhi hit a double with a runner on second base, which brought home the first run.
Another RBI was secured by Lara Buila and she got home herself later on another outfield hit by the catcher Valeria Bortolomai, who unfortunately got injured while stealing second base. However, the Italians managed to load the bases and with a walk, they got another run. Center fielder Andrea Montanari’s hit into right field slipped through Laura Thompson’s glove while attempting a diving catch and resulted in three more runs, which gave the Italians a 7-0 lead.
The British had to score to stay in the game, but Amy Moore’s hit into center field with the bases loaded ended up a fly out, the third one for Team GB in the inning.
Post-Game Comments:
Hayley Scott (head coach of Team Great Britain): "They got hits and we didn´t. Obviously I’m disappointed. We played good three innings, but then we let the game run away from us and they scored more runs than we did. There were two excellent teams playing, but it just wasn’t our day. The whole tournament, we’ve been hitting and scoring lots of runs, but not today. It had nothing to do with their pitching, we just lacked offense today, as we got them under pressure for the first time in that last inning."
Marina Centrone (manager of Team Italy): "We played a good game and it could boost our confidence a bit for the next games. In that fourth inning, it was just our time. They changed the pitcher and we were ready to get some hits. About that injury, Valeria got a cut from a spike from their second baseman."
